The SADC unveils the results of its study
“Profile and Needs of Entrepreneurs in Rural Areas”

The SADC recently conducted a major study of businesses in its territory in order to provide a portrait of entrepreneurship in rural Outaouais.

The SADC mandated SOM, an important market research firm, to conduct a telephone survey of business owners and leaders from the Collines-de-l’Outaouais RCM, the Papineau RCM, as well as from two urban sectors of the city of Gatineau, namely Buckingham and Masson-Angers.

The study specifically aimed to provide a portrait of each business (size, number and type of employees, revenues, etc.), to prepare a profile of business owners in the region and to better understand their succession plan should they decide to leave their business, and to identify the challenges they anticipate on a short-term basis as well as the anticipated needs to mitigate them.

A total of 300 interviews were conducted among the 1254 eligible businesses and organizations in the SADC de Papineau sector. Therefore, 20% of businesses in the territory were surveyed.

The main conclusions of the study:

  • Rural businesses have a local outreach. In fact, 87% businesses’ products and services are sold directly within their RCM or in Outaouais. Only 2% of businesses export outside of Canada.
  • Over the next five years, 41% of entrepreneurs will retire from their business, and 52% of entrepreneurs plan to sell or transfer their business to someone other than a family member. A quarter of entrepreneurs plan to close permanently.
  • The majority of the concerned owners plan to outsource in order to sell or pass on their business. Only a quarter of the concerned owners have prepared a transfer plan for their business.
  • Almost half of the businesses in the territory still do not have a website.

These observations have allowed the SADC to orient and improve its SME guidance service and to initiate local economic development projects focused on these realities.
